What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a key part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a holistic healthcare system practised for over 2,500 years and now used worldwide.

At my acupuncture clinic in Nottingham, treatment is based on both traditional principles and modern understanding of the body.

How Acupuncture Works

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, health is understood as the smooth flow of Qi (vital energy) through pathways in the body called meridians.

When Qi becomes blocked or unbalanced, it may contribute to physical, emotional, or mental symptoms.

Imbalance can be influenced by stress, emotions, diet, injury, illness, overwork, and lifestyle factors.

What Acupuncture Treatment Involves

Acupuncture uses very fine sterile needles placed at specific points on the body to regulate Qi and support the body’s natural healing processes.

The goal is to restore balance, reduce symptoms, and improve overall wellbeing.

Additional Therapies Used

Depending on your needs, treatment may also include other traditional techniques such as:

  • cupping

  • gua sha

  • moxibustion

  • ear seeds

  • acupressure

These may be used alone or alongside acupuncture to enhance results.

This approach allows treatments to be tailored to each individual, supporting both traditional principles and modern healthcare understanding.
