Life in a city like Nottingham can be fast-paced, and for many of us, our ‘fight or flight’ response stays switched on far longer than it should. If you feel constantly ‘wired but tired,’ acupuncture offers a clinically recognized way to hit the reset button.

The Science: How Acupuncture Interacts with Your Nervous System

To understand how acupuncture works for stress, we have to look at the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). Most of us spend our modern lives stuck in "Sympathetic" mode—better known as the fight or flight response. This state floods the body with cortisol and adrenaline, keeping us on high alert.

From 'Fight or Flight' to 'Rest and Digest'

Clinical research suggests that the insertion of acupuncture needles at specific neurofunctional sites stimulates the sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles. This process:

  • Regulates the HPA Axis: Acupuncture helps balance the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis, which is the body's primary "stress control center."

  • Promotes Vagus Nerve Tone: By stimulating the Vagus nerve, acupuncture encourages the body to switch into the Parasympathetic (Rest and Digest) state.

  • Releases Natural Neurochemicals: The process triggers the brain to release endorphins (nature’s painkillers) and serotonin (the "happy" hormone), which naturally helps reduce feelings of anxiety.

For more information, check out the British Acupuncture Council's fact sheets that provide an evidence base for acupuncture. These fact sheets are produced to provide accurate and unbiased general information for a variety of conditions.

A Medical-Grade Approach to Wellbeing

Because I approach acupuncture from a BSc (Hons) perspective, I view your symptoms through the lens of both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and modern anatomy. By targeting specific points, we aim to down-regulate the nervous system's stress response, allowing your body to begin the process of self-repair.

The most vital thing to understand about your health is that the body is biologically designed to heal only when it is in this 'Rest and Digest' state.

Chronic stress acts like a barrier to recovery. Acupuncture is unique because it doesn't just 'take you there' by switching off the stress response; it simultaneously addresses the specific mental, physical or emotional imbalance that needs healing. By calming the nervous system first, we clear the way for your body to do what it does best: repair and heal itself.
